Engagement

Public engagement at the MSCL includes conferences, workshops, and community events that promote dialogue between science and society. Conference formats are designed to facilitate exchanges between science communication practice and research, as well as to advance discussions on Planetary Health. We prioritise co-creation and participatory methods to ensure that science communication is inclusive and resonates with diverse audiences. Our mission is to make scientific knowledge, particularly on the topic of Planetary Health, accessible and relevant to everyone.

Media Service for Journalists

In collaboration with the foundation “Gesunde Erde – Gesunde Menschen” (GEGM; “Healthy Planet – Healthy People”) created by Dr Eckart von Hirschhausen, the MSCL evaluated the GEGM media service on climate and health. This service provides scientific evidence, expert assessments, and practical tips in seven thematic dossiers to support journalists in producing constructive and localised reporting.

Public Health Film Festival

In partnership with the LMU Chair of Public Health and Health Services Research, the MSCL organised and evaluated the Public Health Film Festival three times, where films on public, global, and Planetary Health are screened and discussed with experts. This festival aims to increase the visibility of public health and foster interdisciplinary networking.

Heat Workshops

In partnership with the LMU Chair of Public Health and Health Services Research, the MSCL organised and evaluated a series of “Heat Workshops”, an iterative format which was developed to empower neighbourhoods in preparing for future heatwaves via participatory health communication. These workshops were piloted in three neighbourhoods in the greater Munich area, receiving enthusiastic feedback from local civil societies.

You can find the latest Report on the Heat Workshops here

  • Our publication “Practice Insights for Science Communication: Developing a Workshop on Heat Wave Preparedness for Local Communities” can be found here.
  • The result of the pilot phase is a practical package containing instructions and all the materials needed to run a Heat Workshop independently in your own neighborhood. You can find the practical package here (in German).
  • As part of the International Collaboration and Exchange Program (ICEP), a workshop on heat and heat protection for refugees living in shelters was also developed and tested. You can find the Report for this subproject here.
